Johann Friedrich I Wettin Elector of Saxony

Noted events in his life were:
• Occupation. The last elector of the Ernestine branch of the Saxon House of Wettin was a nephew of Frederick the Wise and succeeded his father, elector John the Steadfast. He had close connections with Luther and was always in conflict with his cousin Maurice of the Albertine Line. In 1547 he lost the decisive Battle of Mühlberg against Charles V at the head of the Protestant Schmalkaldic League. He was taken prisoner and condemned to death. In 1547 he lost his electoral rank to Maurice of the Albertine Line of the House of Wettin.
